Oleksandr Holovachov was born on 15 July 1978 in the city of Lviv, Ukraine. During the study in “53 Lviv secondary school with profound study of English language”, he participated in the biological and ecological olympiads at different levels, and won Silver medal in the 6th International Biological Olympiad 1995. Years of studies at the Department of Zoology, Biological faculty, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv coincided with the first nematological studies under the supervision of Dr. Andriy Susulovsky (State Museum of Natural History, Lviv). They were partly supported by the grants from the International Science Education Programme of the International Renaissance Foundation in 1995-1999.

From 1996 Oleksandr became involved in the activity of the Benedykt Dybowsky Zoological Museum and from 1998 – joined the Western-Ukrainian Ornithological Station (WUOS). Work at the museum was mainly devoted to the restoration of the exhibition after the long lasting renovation of the building, preparation of new exhibits and scientific collections especially of invertebrates, catalogues. As a member of the WUOS he participated in the work of the “Avosetta” bird ringing field station (1998-2000, 2002-2004, as a chief of the field camp in 2002) and “Prypiat” expedition (2003-2004, 2006, 2008), also was trained in the identification of european eagles and other birds of prey by the Eagle Conservation Committee (Komitet Ochrony Orlow, Poland, 1999).

In 2000 he was graduated from the university and received the diploma with distinction of “Master of Science in Biology/Zoology, teacher of biology and chemistry”. In the same year he became employed as Ph.D. student, and in 2002 – as a laboratory assistant at the Department of Zoology, Biological faculty, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. A fellowship from the International Agricultural Centre (Wageningen) and the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries provided the basis for initial collaboration with the Laboratory of Nematology, Wageningen University, where O. Holovachov passed successfully the Nematode Identification Course in 2001 and prepared the Ph.D. thesis entitled “Morphology and Systematics of the Order Plectida Malakhov, 1982 (Nematoda)”.

From September 2002 till May 2006 he occupied a position of laboratory assistant at the Department of Zoology, Biological faculty, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine; he gave practicals in invertebrate zoology and field practice on local invertebrate fauna. From January 2005 till May 2006 he was appointed as a managing editor of the “Visnyk of Lviv University, Biology Series” journal, which is published by the Biological faculty of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

An associate editor of the journals “Nematology” (since 2007), “Journal of the Nematode Morphology and Systematics” (since 2008) and “Russian Journal of Nematology” (since 2006, published by the Russian Society of Nematology). Associate specialist in the Fauna Europea project (Nematodes). Current member of the European Society of Nematologists and Russian Society of Nematologists.
