These are the long-horned grasshoppers among which several species are predaceous.  Conocephalus saltator Sauss. (Xiphidium varipenne Swezey), feeds mainly on insects.  In Hawaii it is known as a natural enemy of leafhoppers and other insects that inhabit cane fields.  It has been credited with being the main factor in natural control of mealybugs (Swezey 1905, Illingworth 1929).  Clonia vittata Thbg. Of South Africa seems to limit itself mostly to an insect diet, consisting of the caterpillars of Busseola fusca Hemp., but also various locusts and grasshoppers (Clausen 1940).
